Thousand of fans will flock to downtown Minneapolis Friday for the Twins first game at Target Field and the city is offering many transportation and parking options, city officials said.

There will be 7,000 parking spots available in the ABC and Hawthorne garages located just a few feet away from the new ballpark, according to a Twins press release

City officials say these garages are the place to park for fans who plan to arrive early to the game and leave late.

Because the ramps are closest to the stadium it will cost between $13 and $15 to park there and, according to a Twins press release, fans should not plan on leaving quickly after the games because the garages will most likely become jammed with cars.

To leave after the game faster fans should park several blocks away. City officials say that within a 15 minute walk to Target Field about 10,000 parking spaces will be available in 23 locations.

Across downtown Minneapolis, more than 25,000 parking spots will be open. Most of them will cost $11 or less during gamedays, city officials said.

Mike Christenson, director of Minneapolis community planning and economic development said drivers should begin planning for parking before they go to a Twins game and to expect some early confusion.

"I believe in the long term there will not be a parking problem," Christenson said.

Some fans are not as confident.

"It looks like a nightmare to me, I have to say," Twins fan Becky Tholen said.

For fans who do not want to deal with driving a vehicle, city officials say taking the light rail or the bus for only 50 cents will provide the perfect solution.

And people who are intimidated by taking a new route may not even have to change their Twins parking plans, said Kevin Gutknecht from the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

"You could probably park where you parked for the Metrodome. You just walk a few blocks in a different direction," Gutknecht said.

To help fans plan ahead and make the most of their Target Field experience, city official have also collaborated to create DestinationTargetField.com to help people manage all their options for getting to games whether it's by car, on a bus or train, or by biking or walking.
